Best Of 2014, So Says Me

Now that 2014 is over I can post my list of the five best comics I read last year. This list is selected from my own reading and is completely biased, since it's limited to the sixty-seven collected editions, reprints and graphic novels I read and therefore based solely on my personal tastes.

Now that 2014 is over I can post my list of the five best comics I read last year. This list is selected from my own reading and is completely biased, since it’s limited to the sixty-seven collected editions, reprints and graphic novels I read and therefore based solely on my personal tastes. Yes, I keep a running list of books I read throughout the year for things such as this list and whether I’m buying far more books than I’m reading, which continues to be the case year after year…

Here are my five picks for best “bound together” comics of 2014, in no particular order. Click the linked titles for full reviews if available.

Escapo Cover

Escapo

A collection of stories from Paul Pope’s past and recoloured for this volume, Escapo is a strong visual narrative about life’s woes in a circus setting. Unique, eye-popping visuals as only Pope can provide, the story is strong and joyfully melancholy.

Cinder And Ashe cover

Cinder And Ashe

From what seems to be DC’s forgotten period, Conway and Garcia-Lopez present a gritty and hard-edged comic long before it was in fashion. Intriguing characters, non-stop action and a tight narrative.

Steranko Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Artist's Edition cover

Steranko Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Artist’s Edition

Scans of original art pages from the blazing sun that was Jim Steranko in his brief career at Marvel. This was my most wished for and anticipated Artist’s Edition and it fully delivered on over-the-top art and wacky dialogue.

Brass Sun The Wheel of Worlds cover

Brass Sun Vol 1: The Wheel Of Worlds

World-building at its best, with a unique look at a solar system and the fun/strange/dynamic people that inhabit it. Fast-paced action along with engaging characters in detailed and lush environments.

Prince Valiant Vol 9 1953-1954 cover

Prince Valiant Vol. 9: 1953-1954

Nine volumes in and I’m still hooked on this wonderful all-ages series. Appealing to the entire family with sword-play, marital insights, cheeky interplay and consistently gorgeous visuals.

Agree 101% on the Steranko Artist Edition Scott. I have the 2nd edition on order now. Beautiful work! It is hard to believe he only had his artist’s hand in 35-40 Marvel comic books (by my count). A small body of work that certainly left a lasting impact on the industry.
