New workshops from the Toronto Cartoonist Workshop

OK, so last time we talked about the Toronto Cartoonist’s Workshops and we sent one of our most trusted correspondent’s to infiltrate the workshops and report back to you guys on what’s it like to take a workshop. That set of workshops wraps up at the end of the month so expect our report real soon. But in the meantime, the TCW has announced a new lineup of workshops starting up in April so you guys need to act fast and check out what’s upcoming up. This time around, they’re offering:

Professional Layout and Story Telling  for Comics  and  Graphic Novels

Instructor: Ty Templeton

From thumbnail layouts to finished pencils, this art focused course teaches everything you need to know about the unique process of telling stories with pictures.  Learn to THINK like a comic artist as well as how to CREATE like one.  Essential learning for future Marvel Zombies, Indy Artists or Webcomic creators.  While a basic drawing skill is helpful, it is not necessary.

Ty Templeton is a three time Eisner-Award winner whose credits include Batman, The Simpsons, Spider-man, Mad Magazine, Superman, Harvey Pekar, Star Trek, The Avengers, Howard the Duck, She-Hulk, Justice League, Hoverboy, the original graphic novel Bigg Time and Dexter: Early Cuts for Showtime.

Start Date:  April 14th, 2010 to June 2nd, 2010

Time: Wednesday 6:30pm.-9:30pm.

Location: O.I.S.E. Building (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) 252 Bloor St. West

Length: 8 weeks of 3 hour classes

Kidding Around: Writing Comics for Younger Readers

Instructor: Sam Agro

An in depth study of the fundamentals of writing comics and animation for kids from 5 to 15. Students will explore writing for established commercial properties and developing characters and stories of their own. The course will include the basics of story structure, kid relevance, humor, idea pitching and how to work effectively with an artist. Through analyzing examples of kids comics and animation, and through practical writing assignments, students will beef up their writing muscles and solidify their understanding of the form.

Sam Agro began his career in 1983, working as a storyboard artist in the animation industry producing hundreds of storyboards for shows like Ewoks and Droids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Ripping Friends. Sam has written for TVO’s Polka Dot Shorts, the animated segments of Elliot Moose is on the Loose and many, many scripts for DC’s Looney Tunes and Block Party comics. Sam regularly performs improv and sketch comedy with the groups The Wrecking Crew and The Canadian Space Opera Company.

Start Date:  April 17th, 2010 to June 5th 2010

Time: Saturday 1pm.-4pm.

Ty Templeton’s Comic Book Bootcamp Level One

Instructor: Ty Templeton

The BOOTCAMP covers every aspect of the art and business of making comics- including layout, storytelling, anatomy, scripting, panel transitions, dialog, plotting, inking, background and cover design, and the basic language of sequential art itself. It is the perfect entry level intensive for anyone interested in working in comics.

Ty has spent years teaching and perfecting this popular workshop and its been packed in previous incarnations. From muscle bristling superheroes, to moody underground hipster webcomics, this class will teach you why you want to make comic art, and how to make it better.
While an ability to draw is helpful, it is not necessary.
