Jiminy Christmas! | DC Clearing Archives Again

I've looked at the ever waning list of upcoming Archives and even questioned in this column if the line was being discontinued. It seems a strategy is becoming clear: low demand reprints will appear in Archive Editions and high profile material will appear in Omnibus editions.

Ultimate Spider-Man not really dying

This will come as no surprise to comic fans but Ultimate Spider-Man isn’t dying, Ultimate Universe Peter Parker is dying and will immediately be replaced with a new character in a new Ultimate Spider-Man costume.  Lame.  It seemed odd that a hot book would have the title character...

CBD’s 52Q | #33: “Pro or Con..tinuity?

Every week Comic Book Daily asks the question and the crew (and special guests) give their answers; we’ll be doing this for 52 weeks. Tip of the hat goes to the gang at Scans Daily for the inspiration.  Pete’s been busy this week, so the question is mine [David Diep] this...

Jiminy Christmas! | IDW’s Artist’s Editions

IDW had some announcements at Wondercon this past weekend, but the one that caught my eye was the release of Walter Simonson’s The Mighty Thor Artist’s Edition.  Here’s their blurb: San Diego, CA (April 1, 2011) – IDW Publishing is thrilled to announce the expansion of...

Knowing Is Half The Battle #2: Continuity

Is continuity important in comics? Recently the issue of comic book storyline continuity has been raised. The exact case I want to talk about is IDW’s G.I. Joe A Real American Hero #164. In this issue, a character that was previously dead, Sneak Peek, has returned to the comic. Comic...

CBD’s 52Q | #30: “News From C2E2″

very week CBD’s Editor in Chief Pete DeCourcy asks the question and the crew (and special guests) give their answers, we’ll be doing this for 52 weeks. Tip of the hat goes to the gang at Scans_Daily for the inspiration. This Week’s Q: What news are you hoping to hear out of C2E2 this...

Just A Thought | Death is Overused

As I’ve previously mentioned on a few occasions, I’m a pretty big fan of pro wrestling. And as I’ve previously mentioned on those previous occasions, yes, I’m well aware that it’s scripted. I like my stories, OK? Wrestlemania is upon the horizon (don’t...

Bianchi Age Of X Universe Cover

Another great piece of art made available today: Simone Bianchi’s cover to Age Of X: Universe issue...

Review | Spider-Man: Big Time

A new artist on an entire story arc of Spider-Man, in one hardcover package.  Spider-Man: Big Time Premiere hardcover collects Amazing Spider-Man 648-651 by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos.  Here’s the publisher’s blurb: Big changes are happening for the Amazing Spider-Man: Bigger...

Captain America 616 Charest Cover

Marvel just sent out a press release about Captain America issue 616: it’s been well covered around the comic sites.  What captured my attention was the beautiful Travis Charest cover: why is this man not doing any comic interiors!  Although I think it’s his use of colour that...

Bound Together | O’Neil & Kaluta’s Shadow

For most comic fans the definitive Shadow was written by Dennis O’Neil and drawn by Michael Kaluta for DC’s The Shadow.  Unfortunately that body of work consists of five issues drawn between 1973 and 1974, a graphic novel in 1988 and a backup story in 1989.  Lucky for fans that...

New Walt Simonson Art

Before you get too excited it’s only a cover but never the less it’s Walt Simonson returning to his longest running work, Thor.  Let’s hope someone can talk him into a regular gig; give the image a click to see it in full size glory. Simonson had a terrific run on Thor,...

Jiminy Christmas! | Disastrous Marvel.com

I wrote a review of Nemesis this week and as usual I like to link up to the publisher’s page, grab their description and see if anything extra is offered.  Every time it’s a Marvel book I cringe internally as Marvel’s website is terrible to find information at.  I normally...

WHOSOEVER HOLDS THIS HAMMER: Chaos War and Blackest Night, a look...

Whosoever Holds This Hammer appears every Tuesday (more or less) exclusively on Comic Book Daily. I did not enjoy Blackest Night. It was slow, repetitive, and about 4 issues too long. I was full of optimism when I cracked the spine on issue 1 but terribly disappointed when I closed the cover...

Review | Nemesis

Like most comic enthusiasts  I saw the online campaign for Nemesis, a creator owned series by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven.  It’s four issues have finally been collected in a hardcover Premiere edition.  I generally like both creators so I was anxious to pick it up.  Here’s...

Marvel wants to kill a character every quarter for your dollars a...

So yeah, it’s been reported that at the ComicPro retailer summit, Marvel is going to start killing characters off every quarter in the hopes of boosting sales. David Gabriel said that while they are going to be killing off a character every quarter, the emphasis is not going to be on their...

Just A Thought | Born Again and Again

Last week the shop I frequent was having a sale on Marvel hardcovers. I went through them and found a great copy of a book I hadn’t read in years Daredevil: Born Again. I wasn’t the only one. Ed (one of the Blue Beetle dinner regulars) also picked up a copy as he had never...

WHOSOEVER HOLDS THIS HAMMER: Wow! Spider-Man Doesn’t Suck A...

Whosoever Holds This Hammer appears every Tuesday (more or less) exclusively on Comic Book Daily. Any of my regular readers know that I am, have been, and always will be a huge Spider-Man fan. Over the years I have owned, and read, pretty much every main title and a great majority of the...
