January 2017 Sales Numbers

Last updated on March 5th, 2017 at 07:20 pm

Diamond released their January 2017 sales numbers over the weekend and ICv2 has extrapolated those and determined actual unit sales: Top 300 Comics Actual and Top 300 Graphic Novels Actual. Also worth noting is Diamond’s Top Ten Books. These numbers are for Diamond’s direct sales in North America only and don’t include Diamond UK or the bookstore market. It’s worth reading the additional information under the sales charts.

For the purposes of the AE Index, where we record initial sales month, two Artist Edition style books published in January 2017 made the sales chart.

# Title Sold
85 Jack Kirby’s The Fantastic Four Artist’s Edition 1027
155 Chris Samnee’s Daredevil Artist’s Edition 580

These two books were only distributed through Diamond and directly through IDW’s website, so these numbers should accurately reflect their first month sales.

Let’s encourage publishers to release their sales numbers.

I’m really surprised that graphic novels sales are so low considering how convenient the format itself is and how much more available they are since here in Canada every Indigo Books/Chapters has a rather large graphic novel section. The format not being able to crack ten thousand is really worrying in my opinion. I realize it is the month after Christmas but one would think that many a youngster with a gift card for the book store from the grandparents would spend some of that dole on graphic novels instead of ‘sensible’ reading. Either something is wrong with the product or our youth! Disconcerting.
