Last Friday night the RAID Studio threw an unofficial bash as part of Fan Expo, Canada’s premiere pop culture event. Held at The Soho House on the corner of Adelaide and Simcoe, party-goers got a chance to enjoy cocktails and chat with artists, writers, and editors about their work, Fan Expo, and why Toronto is the place to be at the end of August.

Each year at Fan Expo I try to spend at least part of my time working retail. For lack of a better term I “started in the industry” in comic book retail and I always like returning to my roots. It also lets me chat with other retailers and lets me hear directly from fans about their likes and dislikes.…

Fan Expo features hundred of artist and artisans.  Every year when I wander through Artists Alley I will find one that has an interesting story, or offers something very kitschy or cool that I need to pick up. This year wasn’t any different from any year previous.  This year I met Thomas Cook. Thomas Cook is an animator who worked…

Last updated on September 30th, 2015 at 07:18 amCaptain Canuck had a huge presence at this year’s Fan Expo. At the Captain Canuck panel on Friday the second animated webisode debuted.  It was good, very good. I can’t wait for the third (the first webisode aired July 1st while  the third is scheduled for release in late October). The panel…

Bitten is a new series coming to television in early 2014, and the cast of this new show were at Fan Expo.  Bitten is about a woman named Elena Michaels, who is the world’s only female werewolf.  She is trying to lead a normal life in Toronto, but her former life collides with her new one, when the other members…

On Fan Expo Sunday, Spider-Man fans got a chance to talk to the man, Dan Slott, about everything going on with our “not so friendly Superior Spider-Man”. The panel included artist Mark Brooks, artist Ryan Stegman, assistant Editor Ellie Pyle and writer (and the man who killed Peter Parker “muwhahahaha”) Dan Slott. I had originally hoped this would have been…

One of the biggest stories to come out of Fan Expo has nothing to do with comic books or video games but rather the convention itself. Fan Expo Canada has been acquired by the multinational Informa; see the press release below or download a PDF. What does this mean for the stars, fans, artists, and dealers at Fan Expo? We’ll…

Recently one of Comic Book Daily’s writers posted a blog about a panel that is happening this weekend at Fan Expo. Ivan Kocmarek (click here to see his post) in this post he described each of the panellists. Two of them being women. They were described as “..one of those rare female anomalies who are mired in the often chauvinistic…

I tried something new for Friday of Fan Expo… Cosplay. I have written before about portraying Captain America at different comic events.  But this time it was my first time being in Cosplay at the biggest comic event in Canada.  It was a new experience for me and I enjoyed it immensely. My idea of being in Cosplay as Thor stemmed from…

Fan Expo is underway, and the first day is all wrapped up. The doors opened to the general public at 4pm (while VIP’s package holders hit the show floors at 2pm), and it became clear very quickly, the crowds were lighter and there were more families at Fan Expo. An event like Fan Expo is perfect for children.  There are…

Last updated on June 18th, 2014 at 10:54 am And so my friends, we find ourselves a week away from the largest of the Canadian comic conventions, Fan Expo. Cosplayers are furiously working on their costumes, collectors are going over their lists, store owners are packing up product, and legions of fans are getting ready to descend upon the Metro…

This year my wife was able to join me on Sunday for Fan Expo.  She enjoys taking pictures and I thought it would be great if she just walked around the show, taking some pictures of the crowd and what was happening.  Here are some of the pictures she took.  A picture is worth a thousand words… so I’ll just…

And so another Fan Expo has come and gone, and those of us who attended are left with fond memories, lighter pocketbooks, and sore, sore feet. Every year Fan Expo continues to grow, bringing more attendees, more exhibitors, and more complaints about crowds. While I was mostly behind a retail booth for the majority of the convention, I was able…

There is a lot of buzz around Captain Canuck lately. A month or so ago CBD reported that Mind’s Eye entertainment hired Canadian writer Arne Olsen to write the script of the promised Captain Canuck feature film. Now, just before Fan Expo a teaser video appeared on the captaincanuck.com website promising that an animated Captain Canuck series is being developed…

CTV was a major presence at Fan Expo this year by setting up a large booth on the convention floor, bringing in cast members from Criminal Minds and Flashpoint for panels and autograph signings and holding special screenings of its new shows like The Following and Arrow.  I attended the special screening and Q&A session for Arrow which included cast…

This year at Fan Expo I got a chance to work with Walter and Marc at the Big B Comics booth, which gave me an interesting dealer perspective on the convention. I saw quite a few sales driven by movies (and speculation thereof), The New 52, and peoples’ love of a bargain t-shirt. Collected editions of the New 52, Walking…
