Covered 365: Day 314

Sgt. Rock, DC Comics, March 1978. Artist: Joe Kubert.

I thought Day #314 was a little wanting, though I really like Joe Kubert’s cover to Sgt. Rock #314, it has the smell of one of those old men’s adventure magazines to it.

Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez has had some strong Batman covers including his Batman #314 cover.

Mike del Mundo gives us something fresh and different on his cover to Wolverine #314, I like the style.

I had to throw in Todd McFarlane’s cover to Amazing Spider-Man #314 in, it’s great stuff.

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

I would generally agree to Kubert, but I looked at that one awhile and the colors were just too dark for me. The Batman is solid but the art just isn’t up to my standards. The Wolverine is static and I have complaints similar to those about the Four Color painted Westerns – good art but not a great _comic book_ cover. The ASM is also too dark and visually confusing, and too goofy for me to say great.

Nothing truly great for #315 so I will go with the Ang Wolverine, which is a poster but has great _comic book_ art and great colors. ASM is good but not up to the standards of some of the recent McFarlanes. Donald Duck is good for a funny animal gag. Some might see Avengers as an asinine choice, but while it’s at the back, I can imagine grabbing it.

Action: “I know – let’s call those madcap kids ‘Zig and Zag’!” “Haw haw, that’s rich! Hmmm… Zig and Zag and Superhorse vs. Supergirl… Yow! Get right on that and live up to the title!!!”

Well if you really scrape you can come up with some gems! That being said… I generally agree with Chris on the assessment of these covers.
As for Meli’s JOWA for tomorrow… those darned Zig and Zag kids couldn’t even break out a criminal like Lex Luthor… they picked some common thug… gee whiz!
