  1. First, thanks for the shout-out.

“Mayor of Casterbridge”? And you don’t get _my_ jokes?

“Originally the mask had exhibited a comic leer, as could still be discerned; but generations of Casterbridge boys had thrown stones at the mask, aiming at its open mouth; and the blows thereon had chipped off the lips and jaws as if they had been eaten away by disease. The appearance was so ghastly by the weakly lamp-glimmer that she could not bear to look at it…”

(Best connecting quote I could find in five minutes, I challenge readers to outdo me.)

  2. Hah ! It was Tomas Hardy – but I had the timeline wrong – my mind went to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

Here’s one from Hardy – I’ll aim it at all the guys stuck in the Silver Age

“There are men whose hearts insist upon a dogged fidelity to some image or cause thrown by chance into their keeping, long after their judgment has pronounced it no rarity—even the reverse, indeed, and without them the band of the worthy is incomplete.”
