Auction Highlights #24

Actually I thought a lot of the results were strong and I’ll go on record as saying that we needed the brakes to come on a bit

A massive focused auction just ended on ComicLink. There’s been lots of buzz on the net about this auction. Most forums are complaining about how poorly most of the comics did. Actually I thought a lot of the results were strong and I’ll go on record as saying that we needed the brakes to come on a bit. You can’t just go overpay for something on one site then put it up on another and expect to double your money. You know people thought the real estate market would keep climbing forever, leveraged based on that assumption and helped bring on the big financial meltdown of  2008. So let’s everybody get real! Please!

There’s too much good stuff for one post so I’ll do one for each era. Today I’ll review some Golden Age results, tomorrow I’ll go over some Silver Age highlights and Sunday I’ll cap it off with a review of the Bronze Age results.

Superman #1, DC Comics (Summer/39), graded by CGC at 2.0 with Tan to Off White pages sold for $36,100.00 on ComicLink on February 18th. Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 2.0 is $25,000.00. This copy has excellent cover appeal and 1.44 times guide should not be a surprise.

Master Comics #34 (12/42), graded by CGC at 9.6 with White pages sold for $5,133.00 on ComicLink on February 17th. Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 9.2 is $1,125.00. From the Mile High Pedigree, the book features a classic cover and is the highest graded copy. Nice to see it get 4.56 times guide.

Detective Comics #1, DC Comics (3/37), graded by CGC at 3.0 with White pages sold on ComicLink for $16,251.00 on February 16th. Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 3.0 is $15,000.00. Such a great comic! Detective #1 is a must for any serious Golden Age collector. I thought it had a chance at $20K but I goes there were a lot of bright colored lights distracting everyone in this auction.

All Winners #1, Timely Comics (Summer/41), graded by CGC at 9.4 with Off White to White pages sold on ComicLink for $29,000.00 on February 16th. Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 9.2 is $40,000.00.  A bit of a surprise for sure. A key 9.4 Timely getting only 72.5% of the 9.2 price.

All Select Comics #1, Timely Comics (Fall/43), graded by CGC at 9.2 with Off White to White pages sold on ComicLink for $27,000.01 on February 16th. Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 9.2 is $26,000.00. Just above guide is surprisingly strong in light of how the All Winners did though the All Select is the highest graded copy while the All Winners is second highest graded.

Tune in tomorrow for the Silver Age review of this auction.
