We’ll Always Have Paris

The Olympics are in Paris this time around, I hope you’ve been enjoying the spectacle. Unfortunately I haven’t been watching as much as I’d like but I am keeping tabs on all the results. So far the Canuck boys and girls are doing great, lets go you hosers! A friend of mine has a son on the Canadian BMX bike team, I remember congratulating him and his reply was something to the effect of “why BMX? why not tennis or basketball? how does one get endorsements as a BMX Olympian?” I changed the subject as quick as I could.

In honor of gay Paree I dug out a cover from the “going to eBay auction” pile that I’ve always liked. Avengers #71 with it’s Paris battle cover holds a dear spot in my heart, this book was featured as my very 1st Undervalued Spotlight #1 from way back in September 1st 2009. Geez, a dud right out of the block… Great cover still, Sal Buscema does some fine work setting up the 1st appearance of the Invaders.

Our splash page of the week comes from Jack Kirby, it’s the two page center splash from Thrills of Tomorrow #19. Some of Kirby’s Golden Age work was freer that his early Marvel work, I think Stan and Jack stuck to a formula in the early Marvel days, we don’t see Jack exploring the page like he used to until at least four years into the revolution.

Our ad of the week comes from Marvel’s Greatest Comics #39. Now here’s an ad I like, to the point and offering solutions! I wonder if this ad worked, heck I wonder if any of the comic ads worked. I’d love to know the top five comic book ads of all time regarding return to the advertiser?

Last night out latest icecollectibles weekly eBay auction ended in a flurry, there were a few benchmark books I was watching, the Nova #1 at CGC 9.8 was one of them. Our copy of Nova #1 closed at $791.75, well above the last sale of $723, but still below the prior sale of $850. Still a good result in my view, on a market still seeing price drops
