Mark Schultz Carbon 3

Last week Carbon 3 was released by Mark Schultz. If you are not familiar with Mark Schultz, he is most famous for being the Creator of Xenozoic Tales and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.

He is notoriously slow and has not done a Xenozoic Tales story since 1996. That is changing as we speak. Carbon 3 is very heavy on preliminary drawings for the upcoming Xenozoic Graphic novel, and I for one can’t wait!

Hannah and Jack, the two main characters in Xenozoic are featured prominently in many full-size renderings and are a wonder to behold.

Also featured in Carbon 3 are many new examples of characters from Myth and Pulp backgrounds, as well as his recent novella, “Storms at Sea” from 2015.

I love seeing his process. Mark’s preliminary pages are truly works of art unto themselves and in many ways, I often enjoy them more than the inked images, but that’s just me. He has a unique inking style that employs a dry brush technique that he has refined to a thing of beauty!

Carbon 3 is very much an art book. There is very little written word except for a forward and sleeve notes where the artist is very cognizant of the fact that he is not very fast when it comes to producing work and he genuinely pokes fun at himself regarding this.

I can’t recommend Carbon 3 high enough. The 3 volumes of Carbon are well worth adding to your treasure trove of books. Even if you don’t have a treasure trove, you will after adding these books to your shelf!

I for one can’t wait to see the new graphic novel.

Until then, continued happy collecting!
