Auction Highlights #66

Auction Highlights #66

ComicLink’s May Featured Auction has just ended. All books below sold between Tuesday May 22nd and Thursday May 24th.

It was nice to see a bit of a mix in the top 50 books by value. These top 50 are usually dominated by Silver Age Marvel’s but this auction only saw 27 Silver Age Marvel’s amongst this group. A CGC 8.5 Incredible Hulk #1 was the top book in this auction fetching a solid $47,000. Golden Age comics had 18 entries in the top 50 as the Golden Age revival continues.

So let’s jump right into some results I found interesting and frustrating!

Brave and the Bold #34, DC Comics, (Ferbuary/March, 1961) Graded by CGC at 9.4 with Off White to White pages sold for $8,927.00 on. The Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 9.2 is $4,800.00.

This is the highest graded copy of Hawkman’s 1st Silver Age appearance. Early 1960’s DC’s have been getting great prices lately and this strong finish shows the trend continues.

The funny thing about Brave and Bold #34 is that you can’t give them away in the lower grades.

Here’s another thing, I don’t like these DC revival books. 1st Silver Age Atom? 1St Sliver Age Flash? Give me a Showcase #6 over a Showcase #22 (speaking on merit alone here and not current market value).

Advantage Seller.

Daredevil #1, Marvel Comics, (April, 1964) Graded by CGC at 7.5 with Off-White pages sold for $5,104.00. The Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 7.5 is $2,211.75.

I nearly fell off the chair when I saw this, what gives? It does look like a nice tight copy though doesn’t it?

A nice copy of DD #1 has been on my list for a while; the CGC 4.0 I have just isn’t cutting it! I’ve featured this book on my Undervalued Spotlight and I’m still a strong believer in it long term.

I waited in the weeds hoping to snipe it for just below guide but that all ended vary quick as the price continued to climb. And why shouldn’t it climb? It’s the last of the big Marvel Keys and besides, look what the Journey into Mystery #83 (1st Thor) CGC 7.5 got in this same auction, almost 10K!

Advantage Buyer – (for the long term)

Iron Man #55, Marvel Comics (February, 1973) Graded by CGC at 9.4 with Off White to White pages sold $1,555.00. The Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 9.2 is $325.00.

I was very interested in this auction; I just posted the Thanos Effect a week ago and wanted to see if it was still in effect and indeed it is.

Amazing what 2 seconds of screen time can do to the value of a comic book.

Maybe the buyer saw the old label and though it could be pressed into a 9.6?

I think these prices will come back down.

Advantage Seller.

Torchy #5, Quality Comics (July, 1950) Graded by CGC at 8.5 with Off White to White pages sold for $1,344.00. The Overstreet price guide value for this comic at8.5 is $880.00.

Man did I ever want this book! I think this is one of the greatest covers of the late Golden Age; it is a Bill Ward masterpiece!

I was aggressive in my bid, I thought I had this one. The last CGC 8.5 didn’t even get guide value, but then again that was before I featured it in my Undervalued Spotlight!  I gotta stop featuring books I don’t own yet!!

Advantage Buyer (I so badly wanted it to be me)

Tales of the Unexpected #77, DC Comics (June/July, 1963) Graded by CGC at 9.4 with White pages sold for $281.00. The Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 9.2 is $210.00.

Boy did I ever want this book! I used it in a Sleepy Censor post a couple of years back and have been looking for a nice copy since

I swear my wife walks into the room just as I was about to snipe at $307! Anyway we got to talking and I was seconds late with my bid. Gahhhh!

If the winner is reading this please post that you had your high bid somewhere in the 500s, I’ll feel better!

The Beast Oracle of Uranus!!

Advantage Buyer (which should have been me)

Space Family Robinson, Gold Key Comics, (August, 1969) Graded by CGC at 9.6 with White pages sold for $45.00. The Overstreet price guide value for this comic at 9.2 is $45.00.

What’s a comic collector to do with these really nice Gold Keys from this era?

So many great properties were licensed for comics back in the 1960s. Some like Star Trek have stood the test of time and become even bigger than they were before. Others like Space Family Robinson have not been able to make that generational jump and their nostalgia Bell curve has made its way through a decade ago.

I personally love the painted covers of the Gold Keys from this era. A bargain at the 9.2 price.

Advantage Buyer.

So I won nothing! How did you do?

I was curious if you have any information about Werewolf By Night 32? I have noticed it has gone crazy lately. The ebay auctions are going way over guide. I thought I must have missed something.

Thanks
Phil

Did you win that piece Charlie? That’s the convention art that made Hughes stop doing convention sketches.

I’m now signed up for all the auction sites and will try and see what I can offer Auction Highlights readers from the art side.

How is buying a DD#1 cgc 7.5 for $5104 advantage buyer long term. Walt I have to disagree with you big time on this one. I can get a DD#1 cgc 9.0 for less than $5104.
Advantage should be seller getting 3 times the value as DD#1 cgc 7.5 go for around $2Kish.
